The Dan River Atlas
Rediscovering River History on the Dan, Smith's and Banister. "The Dan River Atlas is the 13th in a series of Virginia river atlases published by the Virginia Canals & Navigations Society. Our goal is to bring back to light a lost era in Virginia's history when her rivers and streams formed a great network of public works to promote commerce, trade and prosperity. These waterways were the superhighways of their time, but they have been forgotten. We're trying to learn the history of that era, and to explore the rivers to rediscover what's left of the locks, canals and sluices used by the boats, and the remains of the industries which they served." Prepared for the Virginia Canals and Navigations Society and the Dan River Basin Association by W .E. Trout, III. Contains 106 pages and costs $20.00 plus $1.50 for shipping and handling charges.
Country Folks
Can you go back to where you came from and relive stories that made your
youth seem like yesterday? Don't say goodbye to your yesterdays.
Recapture them in the stories that will serve as a magnet and help
explain to new generations the old times and some of our small part in
history. "Here's to the story, the good old story, the story that our
fathers told. They are as suitable tonight, and as jolly and bright, as they were in the days
of old."
The stories in Preston's book were written at various times over the
period 1985-1999. The Great Depression of the 1930s is a recurring theme
in many of the stories because that was the state of conditions that
existed during the author's formative years. After collecting the
stories into book form, he was somewhat amazed to find that so many of
them contain information on places, things, and events that have now
become a part of history.
We hope you will find something in the book that will bring back
cherished memories so that you will exclaim, "I remember that!" or "My
folks used to tell that tale ..." or "Mama said that" or "I did that
too." Everybody should spend some time thinking about who they are,
where they came from, and what has happened along the way. This book is
a salute to all who passed on their ability to concoct a good story so
that generations to come will not only enjoy their humor but get some
idea of how their ancestors viewed their lives and times.

in an aircraft factory, and a WWII fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air
